Refugee Week

Posted by St Dominic's Priory College on 19 June 2019
Refugee Week

This week in Australia we are celebrating and acknowledging the contributions made by refugees to Australian society.  Refugee Week aims to educate the Australian public about who refugees are and why they have come to Australia.  It also aims to help people understand the many challenges refugees face. At St Dominic's we are a most fortunate school having always had the opportunity of getting to know refugees as individual people rather than a labelled group.  The contribution of former refugees is something we value highly.

Also in this Bulletin:

  • We congratulate students whose poems and short stories are featured in the latest edition of Oz Kids in Print and also publish the work of Mehul in Year 8, whose poem 'The Migrant Girl' was awarded 'Poem of the Month' in the Poetry in Action poetry competition.

  • Our Primary classes learnt how to play a djembe with the team from African Beat

  • Year 4 enjoyed dressing up and sharing a medieval feast as part of Medieval Day

  • In preparation for their Friendship Liturgy, the Year 3 Class made paper collage friends and wrote free verse poems on what it means to be a good friend.

  • Students from across Years 3-6 did exceptionally well at the SACPSSA Athletics Carnival on Tuesday June 11; with our Year 5 and Year 6 athletes being awarded Year Level Champions and our team placing third overall.  Well done, girls!

  • In support of Reconciliation Week, an Indigenous Australians display was constructed in the Library with an accompanying competition for students to identify as many of the featured Indigenous Australians as possible.  The aim of this was to create greater awareness of the contribution Indigenous Australians make to the broader community.

  • Year 11 and Year 12 students participated in the inaugural Dominican Feud against Blackfriars Priory School, St Mary's College, and Cabra Dominican College.  The event provided the opportunity for students of Dominican schools to come together in a social setting and engage in some friendly competition.

  • Year 12 Business & Enterprise students were given hands-on, practical insight into the marketing and management of small businesses when they attended the Food Secrets of Glynde & Stepney Tour.

Upcoming

  • Parents & Friends Chocolate Drive: boxes will be coming home soon!

  • 2019 School Musical: We are proud to announce that St Dominic's Priory College is the first South Australian school to present Roald Dahl's Matilda The Musical.  Get your tickets online now.

A Time for Community

Posted by St Dominic's Priory College on 5 June 2019
A Time for Community

The St Dominic's Priory College Hall houses many significant gatherings on any day of the week.  In the past week, there have been two very different community events and, at the end of the month, the space will again be transformed as the Year 8-11 cohort present the 2019 Musical Production.

  • Vinnies Mass: Tuesday morning saw the Hall transformed into a space for prayer as Years 7 12, led by the Student Vinnies Team, raised their voices in prayer and song for the Vinnies Mass. We are only at the beginning of winter and so your donations of warm blankets, winter clothing, and non-perishable food will be greatly appreciated by the recipients of the annual Vinnie's Winter Appeal.  The sooner we receive them the sooner we can pass them on to our Prospect Chapter for distribution.

  • Parents & Friends Quiz Night: By 7:30pm on last Friday night, the Hall was buzzing with laughter and conversation as the St. Dom's community, dressed in their country and western gear, came in to the stunning western style décor, and settled down for the 2019 Quiz Night.  Sincere thanks to our team of dedicated organisers, and all who came along! It was really great to see some of our newest parents take part.

Upcoming

  • First meeting of the 2019 Fete Commitee is on next Wednesday June 12 from 7:30pm.  It is preceeded by a 7:00pm pizza supper catch up.  New Parents and "old" please consider getting on board - this week the Auction and Lucky Dip Convening Teams are asking for expressions of interest.

  • Parents & Friends Chocolate Drive: Towards the end of this term, each family will be issued with a box of chocolates to sell as part of this Parents & Friends' fundraiser.  Should families not wish to participate, we ask that they return the reply slip published in the Bulletin, to ensure they are not allocated a box.

  • 2019 School Musical: We are proud to announce that St Dominic's Priory College is the first South Australian school to present Roald Dahl's Matilda The Musical.  Get your tickets online now.
