Today is International Women's Day

Thousands of students have been educated at St. Dominic's, and some of them come each year to the Old Scholars' Annual Mass and morning tea/lunch. Last Sunday we had once again past students from 70, 60, 50 years ago right up to the 2016 graduates.

Ash Wednesday

Posted by St Dominic's Priory College on 1 March 2017
Ash Wednesday

Today, students from Reception to Year 12, gathered in the Chapel or the Hall to take their part in the Ash Wednesday Liturgy as we commence the season of Lent.  The prayer below, used in the Liturgy, reminds us of one aspect of the symbolism of the ashes.

Dear Friends in Christ, we use these ashes as a  mark of our turning towards God.  We ask you loving God to bless all
who seek your forgiveness and all who receive the mark of these ashes today.  May we keep this Lenten season faithfully
in preparation for the joy of Easter.

Yesterday we gathered to celebrate the investiture of our School Leaders at Mass celebrated by Fr Tony Densley.  This was an uplifting experience.  How the Christian life can be lived faithfully in our community was the subject addressed by two leaders who reflected very wisely on the readings chosen for this Mass.  An extract of their reflections is published in the front page of today's Bulletin.

Also in today's Bulletin:

  • 2017 School Leaders are announced

  • Field Day 2017

  • The Tuckshop's Wednesday Lunch Specials for the rest of the term are published

  • There is important information for Year 10, 11 & 12 parents about the MENINGOCOCCAL B VACCINE HERD IMMUNITY STUDY

Parent Engagement at St Dominic's

Posted by St Dominic's Priory College on 22 February 2017
Parent Engagement at St Dominic's

Since last week's letter we have been engaged as large groups in:

  • The Year 12 2016 High Achievers Assembly

  • The Year 9 and 10 Parent Teacher information sessions

  • School excursions, especially the lucky Year 4/5s, to the Women's Australian Open

  • Tonight's first P&F Meeting is coming up, and

  • Tomorrow Year 6-12 be competing as House Teams, at our Santos Field Day

Our staff are behind the organisation of these events but the presence of parents is what makes them strongly supportive for our school community.  As mentioned at Monday night's Parent Teacher gathering the value of a family's investment of time and interest in their daughter's education cannot be overstated.

In connection with the meetings and events of the last week we are publishing a photo of the 2016 students at the High Achievers Assembly.  Our SACE and Year 12 Coordinator Greg Larwood presented each student's profile of achievement with tips from their subject teachers as to why they attained a high grade, while not necessarily starting the year with one.  Shanna Lee, Head Prefect 2016, who is this week commencing her studies in Medicine at Adelaide University, held the close attention of her audience at this Assembly.  Her talk is well worth the reprint which is in today's Bulletin

Also in this week's Bulletin:

  • Ahead of tonight's Parents & Friends meeting, the P&F have launched the 2017 Sports Day RosterSign up online here.

  • The Year 4/5s were lucky VIPs at the Australian Women's Open (Golf)

  • There is an important notice regarding the scheduling of holidays during term time

  • Year 11 student Amy Pham reports back on her recent Student Exchange to France

Help Wanted

  • The Primary School is still on the look out for additional Coaches for Thursday Night Netball.

  • Parents are asked to ensure that they collect their daughters promptly upon the conclusion of co-curricular activities (such as Homework Club, Maths Club, Choir & Sporting practices).

  • The 2017 Sports Day Raffle is on the look out for Prizes

Coming Up

  • Parents & Friends Meeting 7:30pm TONIGHT in the College Reception Area - All welcome

  • Tickets ($25) are still available for Sunday's charity screening of 'Lion' - all proceeds go directly to our outreach efforts in Sri Lanka.  Get your tickets from the Accounts Office by Friday.  For more information, see the event page here.

Our Family at St Dominic's

A Partnership in Faith

In this week's Bulletin you will catch glimpses of last Sunday's congregation of families, staff and friends.  The blessings we receive as a community are many through your presence among us.  The diversity of our community is especially evident in the photographs.

Upcoming

  • Parent Information Nights: It was very good to meet our Year 11 and Year 12 Parents on Monday night.  We were able to share with each other whowe are, as co-operators in your daughters' final, and second to final year of secondary schooling.

Tonight we are expecting a good response from our Year 8 and Year 7 Parents in attendance at what is a crucial part of their involvement this year.

The Year 9/10 Parent Information Night is scheduled for Monday 20 February.

  • Parents & Friends Committee Meeting: A reminder that the first Parents & Friends meeting is scheduled for 7:30pm on Wednesday 22 February.  The focus will be planning for Sports Day, an important sporting and social event on our calendar that will occur on Sunday 26 March.  An invitation is extended to everyone to come along.  No commitment is required, just a desire to learn more about what's happening in the school and meet other parents.

  • Sri Lanka Trip movie fundraiser on Sunday 26 February.  The inaugural Sri Lanka Trip participants will be hosting a fundraising afternoon tea and screening of Lion at the Capri Theatre (141 Goodwood Rd) from 2:30pm on Sunday 26 February.  Tickets ($25) are available from the Accounts Office [contact: 8267 3818] during school hours.  For further information, see the Facebook event page here.

Can you Help?

  • SPORTS DAY 26 MARCH: We are always very grateful for the assistance given by parents on Sports Day.  Once again we are asking for helpers to set up

Each year a Sports Day Raffle is conducted to raise funds for the College with a wonderful variety of prizes to be won. The Parents & Friends are in the process of sourcing prizes and would be very grateful for any donation of items for the raffle. Donor businesses/individuals will be acknowledged on the tickets and in the Bulletin. If you have any contacts or have donations that you can provide please contact the College Office [contact: 8267 3818] who will pass on the details to the committee.
