Parental Company on the School Journey

Depending upon your daughter's age and year level, different aspects of school life make a claim on your love and your time.

  • Certainly if your children are in Year 4, you have been supporting your daughters as they receive the Sacraments of Confirmation and First Holy Communion.

  • If your daughter is in Year 10 you would have been watching and encouraging her as she finalised her Report for the MYP Personal Project which was due in on Monday afternoon.  We look forward to seeing you at the upcoming Personal Project exhibition.

  • Many school events are across year levels and that is true of Book Week being celebrated across Australia this week.  We are watching with interest the upcoming challenge for Year 8s who are taking part in the Kids Cancer Project "Write a Book in a Day."

  • Parents of our Year 12s will definitely be aware that this week the Year 12 Drama Production, "Ruby Moon" will perform for audiences over two nights, Thursday and Friday.  We wish them well.  Tickets ($12 | $8) are available at the door from 7pm each night.

  • We look forward to seeing numbers of you in conversation with our teachers and your daughters at next Monday's Parent Teacher interviews, and next Thursday's Subject Counselling Day for Year 10 and Year 11.

Also in this week's Bulletin:

  • There's a timely reminder about the College's procedures regarding Mobile Phone use and communication with your daughter/s during school hours.  Please take the time to refamiliarise yourself with the Mobile Phone Policy as published in today's Bulletin.

  • We give sincere thanks to our Quiz Night committee and generous donors who facilitated the success of Quiz Night | Black & White on friday night.

  • Parents will be very interested to read the annual Commonwealth Compliance Report, which confirms the high standards achieved at St. Dominic's and confirms the factors that generate those standards.  It is available online here or by request via the reply slip in today's Bulletin.

  • We congratuate our Primary Poets who placed 1st, 2nd and 3rd in the Poetry Section of the SA Young Writers Awards.

  • Week 6-10 Wednesday Lunch Specials are published.

  • As we look towards the upcoming Dominican Cup Debate at Blackfriars (date TBD), we wrap up the 2017 interschool debating competition with some impressive results.

Our Connected Lives

Our Connected Lives

It was good to see such a big crowd at last Friday Night's Dare2Dream Wine and Cheese tasting evening; a very successful event socially and financially for the youth in Nagpur.

We hope that this coming Friday night will see another socially successful event hosted by the Parents and Friends, viz., the Black and White Quiz Night.  It would be great to get at least two more parent tables.  It is possible to pay at the door, but please let us know that you are booking a table.  Sincere thanks to those parents who have booked as well as staff and students who have taken a table.  This is not really a big fund raiser but a "fun raising" chance to meet and share a night with people while attempting to find some correct answers to the Quiz Master's questions!  Come on in and sign up!

Coming up also is the Old Scholars Luncheon on Sunday August 27 at the Barton's Restaurant.  Bookings and payments of $30 with further details can be made at the school office.

Important Reminders

  • At any time throughout the year, we ask that parents communicate with the College immediately if their child's circumstances change. Please see inside today's Bulletin for more information.

  • Parents who require interpreters for the upcoming Parent Teacher Interviews and/or Subject Counselling Day are asked to make contact with the College to communicate their need and confirm what times a translator will be available.

  • This week's Fete Appeal is $2 for the Lucky Dip Stall.

  • Pot Planting Morning is coming up on Saturday 26 August from 9am.  Please enter via the Barnard Street Driveway.

  • The Year 3 Classroom is currently collecting 1KG COSTCO pretzel / popcorn containers for an upcoming art activity.

  • To celebrate the start of Book Week and raise funds for The Kids' Cancer Project, the 'Write a Book in a Day' team will be hosting a BOOK SWAP on Monday 21 August.  Please donate any unwanted books that are still in good condition by Friday 18 August.  On the day of the swap, books will be on sale for $2 to those who did not bring a book in, or $1 to those who did.  Any unsold books will be donated to the Book Stall at this year's Fete.

"Love has no Boundaries"

"Love has no Boundaries"

- St Dominic's Day Mass 2017 -

In any week there is much to observe, enjoy and participate in, wherever students are making the most of each day.  That is certainly our experience at St. Dominic's.

Yesterday, we participated in a beautiful Mass for the Feast of St. Dominic.  Our guests from Blackfriars, St. Mary's and Cabra took part in it also.  The theme: "Love has no Boundaries", was explored in the words of Jesus in the Gospel of the Good Samaritan, in the commentaries, the music, the reflections, and in the art work to which every student in the college contributed.  The day ended with the distribution of the black and white sweets!

To come, is Friday's annual holiday in honour of our patron saint.  Thank you St. Dominic.

Also in this week's Bulletin

  • We congratulate the two St Dominic's Priory College teams who placed second and third in the 2017 Aurecon Bridge Building competition.

  • There is an excellent article by a Year 12 student, chosen as a South Australian Youth Parliamentarian in a program run by the YMCA which aims to connect politicians and decision makers with youth voices and opinions, as well as providing youth leadership training.

  • 20 Year 11 students have returned from Canberra and we feature the highlights of their visit.  The Australian Government recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to visit the national capital and has provided a $60 rebate per student as part of its Parliament and Civics Education Rebate program.

Upcoming Dates

  • Friday 11 August: The College will be CLOSED for the St Dominic's Day holiday

  • Friday 18 August: Parents & Friends Quiz NightGet your tickets online.

  • Thursday 24 + Friday 25 August: Year 12 Drama production "Ruby Moon".  Tickets ($8/$12) will be available at the door.

"Loved and Honoured, leading us to Greater Faith"

"Loved and Honoured, leading us to Greater Faith"

- Dominic de Guzman -

In early August we celebrate with thanksgiving the life of our founder St. Dominic de Guzman, born in Caluerega, Northern Spain, in 1170.  After so many centuries why is it that this humble but very dynamic man has left such a mark on so many millions of Christians around the world?  Each one of our students will have, by the time they have completed their education in a Dominican school, their own answer to that question.  Dominic himself would say that it does not matter whether he is remembered or not, If the truth of the gospel has been preached with fidelity to the message of Jesus.  We would perhaps reply: True Dominic, but you are, and have been an inspiration to so many down through the centuries.  We need this inspiration; you are loved and honoured in our school which bears your name.  You have come down to us as a man of God and a man of the people.

Our thoughts turn often to one of Dominic's true followers, who was called from our community last term.  We would all agree that indeed Sr. Mary Anne Holland witnessed, as Dominic did, with humility and love and determination to live the Gospel message and to spread God's word throughout her life.

This week representative staff and students will join in the celebrations of neighbouring Dominican Schools, Blackfriars Priory School, St. Mary's College and Cabra College

Parents of St Dominic's are warmly invited to join in our celebration of the Mass for the Feast of St. Dominic on next Tuesday 8 August in the Gym.
Please be seated by 11.30 am.  We would appreciate your reply to the invitation via this bulletin for numbers.
